Studio BUG FILMS' long-awaited adaptation of Kamome Shirahama's Witch Hat Atelier pulled a rare feat for a debut anime this week: the series trended globally on X within 48 hours of its April 6 premiere, driven by a two-episode launch on Crunchyroll, ABEMA, and Netflix across regions of Asia.

"We wanted every spell to feel like it was being drawn on the page — that the act of magic and the act of making art were the same thing." — director Ayataka Tanemura, in a launch-week interview with Crunchyroll.

The fantasy seinen currently sits at number four on MyAnimeList's Spring 2026 lineup and is building an early case for next year's Anime of the Year awards. Shirahama's original manga — published in Kodansha's Monthly Morning Two since 2016 — is widely credited as one of the medium's most ink-intensive ongoing works, and the adaptation's faithful translation of its panel art is drawing particular praise.
